Is Anyone Out There?
I stopped writing because no one was reading or so it seemed. Since someone just added some comments, I’m back! What is everyone reading this summer? I’m making my way through the Bluebonnet Books first. So far I’ve enjoyed Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen, The Thing about Georgie by Lisa Graff , and One-handed Catch by Mary Jane Auch . I’m currently starting Atherton by Patrick Carman. I really enjoyed his series The Land of Elyon. Is anyone using their Public Library Card? I hope so! I’m currently traveling but we’ve visited both book stores and the local public library. Whatever you are reading, I hope it is helping you escape the heat!
Confessions of a Librarian
Earlier, I wrote that I only had 2 more Bluebonnet Books to read. Then August came and I decided that I would skip the last two books. I know, shame on me. Two weeks ago, I was in classes (yes, we have to keep learning too) and other librarians told me that I was really missing out on one of the two that I wasn’t planning on reading. They said it was really funny. So, I will be bringing those two books back home with me and reading them. You can ask me about them! Down Girl and Sit: On the Road is the one I was told about and I promise I will read the book about mummies too!
Bluebonnet Books 2007-08
I have only 2 more Bluebonnet Book nominees to read for this year. I recently finished The Earth Dragon Awakes. This historical fiction book is a good story that leaves you in suspense a few times but what’s really cool is that a lot of the story really happened. If you read the author’s end notes or epilogue (I don’t have the book in front of me so I don’t know what he called it), the author tells you which events really happened even though they happened to someone else. The whole story takes place in the great San Francisco Earthquake. Certainly an event that I don’t wish to experience for real! So, if you’re tired of made up stories and are waiting for Harry Potter, run to the library and try this book. It’s not very long and you’ll experience an earthquake safely!
Scary Stories
I finished two books this weekend. I finished The Blue Ghost by Marion Dane Bauer and The Ghost’s Grave by Peg Kehret. Both of these books are on the Bluebonnet list and they both feature kids who have a ghost communicate with them. Students are always asking for scary books which, of course, are not in a separate section of the library. What is scary to one person is not scary to another. I know the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books are popular but what are your favorite scary books?
Mystery : Double Identity
Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix is on the Bluebonnet List for 2007-2008. This is a cross between mystery and science fiction. If you don’t read a summary of the book or talk to someone who has already read it, you might be very surprised at the outcome. We just got 2 copies so check it out! What other mysteries kept you guessing right up to the end?
